The Priamar’s Fortress The Priamar’s Fortress in Savona is an imponent structure that faces the city’s downtown in relation with the port. It was built in 1542 on a headland, (where already in medieval times, rose the heart of the Savona people) during the Republic of Genoa, when this one had the control of the city after the free communes rebelled and needed to built a defense point from possible attacks coming from the sea. The Priamar’s Fortress is also knowned because it was transformed in a military prison. During the times of resurgence, it became a prison for Giuseppe Mazzini, whose cell can be visited until now.
